What are your thoughts on possessions & demons...Do you believe that a person can become possessed by a demon?

The whole idea started with early people. When someone acted strange they blamed it on evil spirits and killed a person. Then we jumped to the Egyptians. How we have "the devil made me do it", they had "Ka # made me do it". And then to the middle ages which is when people started claiming into possessions and demons. I don't believe someone can actually be posessed but I think a spirit could affect a persons mind/conscience to make them think something bizzarre, act weird or talk strangely.

Dan, are you involved in a group? You seem to have a lot of knowledge, so I was just wondering if you used it in a group.
I think I agree with you because I haven't seen anything otherwise...yet. If one day it happens that we get to experience someone who believes they are possessed, I reserve the right to change my mind!

Nope, just I took way too many courses in school. And now taking Pysch 101 for my senior year in high school.
Unless you mean organizations like scouting/MDA/etc. I'm involved with scouting by working for them during the summer.
And I hear a lot of stories, so you get used to them.

I have always been fascinated with the occult as well as the paranormal. I had read alot on demons and possession but i have never experienced or seen anything first hand. I have known folks who were/are involved in High Magick where they evoke angels/demons/entities etc. and own many books on the subject but again its not something i have been involved in, just studied about it...
Can a person be possessed? I believe they can, especially if they leave themselves open and unguarded. Sometimes you can unknowingly provoke and open gateways. The church & medicine said alot of possession cases were actually people with schizophrenia and back when they didn't know about schizophrenia they called it possession but i don't believe it is true of every case...i think there have been some legit cases out there...

Syl,
I agree with you, I also believe a person can be possessed...but because of movies like The Exorcist we tend to think that it is always like that...but I have read stories were people have claimed to have someone living in them and it is nothing like they make it out to be like in movies and television.
Has anyone read the real story of the Amityville horror? If not you should check it out, very interesting...I think there are a few websites with the actual home owner telling the story in his own words...sounds just like a typical ghost story.

I believe they can, but not by your average spook. Only ancient, non-terrestrial spirits have the will, knowledge, and sheer power to manifest this way. Also, they seem to exhibit a very precise knowledge of human anatomy, and I believe they use that knowledge as a means to subvert the host neurologically, psychically, and biologically.
They tend to pick one of two types of people, those who are weakened by some sort of physical or mental trauma, and those who are natural vessels, aka mediums. Most victims are pubescent, which seems to play a factor. For example, poltergeist activity will usually center on a younger person.
There's a theory that the hormone changes during puberty also cause neurological anomalies to manifest, and may, for a time, amplify one's psychic ability. This amplification seems to be a beacon for entities such as this who are seeking a host. If you're already predisposed to being a medium, this may be irresistable for these types of entities.
Also, another interesting thing, most possessions are not by one entity, but many. There is what is known as a 'gatekeeper' entity. It is typically described as the strongest of the spirits involved in the possession, and some say they actively summon other entities to the host. There is similar behavior amongst demonic hauntings of locations.
The main difference between the two is that in a possession, the gatekeeper and the other spirits seem to want to be there, and unwilling to leave the host. In the location-based hauntings, the gatekeeper seems to be holding or binding human spirits to the site, which are usually willing to be sent to the other side. There are a few recorded cases of human gatekeeper spirits, but only in location-based hauntings, never possessions.

Your answer sounds very X-files-ish in the first paragraph! (Sorry, language arts teacher making a connection.)
I agree with what you said about people that are weakened in some way or are sensitive to spirits being the most likely to be possessed. As of yet, we haven't encountered this, thank goodness.
